The Mississippi State Bulldogs will hit the road to take on the Tennessee Volunteers on Tuesday evening in a matchup of top half SEC teams. The Bulldogs come into the game with a somewhat surprising 4-3 record in league play with a 9-7 record overall. Despite their league success, they have lost three of their last four games.
Tennessee has also been cold lately losing their last two games after starting the season 10-1. The Vols also boast a 4-3 record in SEC play.
The game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM EST tip-off with Tennessee favored by 9.5 paints at home. The total is set for 129.5 points.
Bulldogs looking for a signature victory
Mississippi State turned some heads a couple of weeks ago when took down a feisty Florida Gators team at home after a tough luck loss to Texas A&M. They followed that up with another bad loss at home to Mississippi before another hard fought loss to Alabama. This leads most to beleive that the Bulldogs simply caught the Gators on a bad day.
The Bulldogs are led by a trio of sophomores in DJ Stewart, Iverson Molinar, and Tolu Smith. All of whom average at least 13 points per game. Smith leads the team in rebounding at nearly nine per game while Stewart and Molinar are both shooting over 37% from behind the arc on the season. Senior forward Abdul Ado started the season off productively but has tailed off a bit since entering conference play.
Mississippi State is just 2-4 straight up and against the spread away from home this season with their total going over in five of their six road/neutral games.
Tennessee looking to get back on track
The Tennessee Volunteers looked like one of the more elite teams in the nation to open the season. The Vols racked up ten wins in their first eleven games behind an elite defense and quality depth and leadership on offense. Rick Barnes’ group still ranks third in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency but has only managed 113 total points in their last two games combined. In the loss to Florida they managed just 0.70 points per possession while a top 25 Missouri team forced them into 18 turnovers, ten of which were live ball steals.
The Vols are just 8-5 against the spread on the season and 6-4 ATS at home. Their margin of victory is +14.2 points per game but they are underperforming by -0.2 points per game.
Mississippi State at Tennessee (-9.5) – Total: 129.5 points
Bovada has the spread favoring Tennessee by 9.5 points at home with the total set at 129.5 points. The Vols are -650 on the moneyline while the Bulldogs are +425
As stated, Mississippi State caught the Gators on the wrong day; get that victory. Tennessee is simply the better team and they are playing at home. Take the Vols to cover.
